We’ve got some tasty rolling Drum ‘n’ Bass for you today from the Med School camp. It’s a four track EP, entitled ‘Losing My Mind’, from Med School’s latest recruit, Anile and it brings a strong mixture of authentic sounds and raw basslines. Released 24th November, it’s an EP that is a sure sign of intent from this widely unknown producer.

The lead and title track gets things rolling with a gradual rise in energy, distant melodies and soulful vocals before the crisp bassline takes a hold. The main beat is given a balanced mixture of authentic, complex sounds with the strings and brass and the raw and energetic rhythm and percussion of contemporary Drum ‘n’ Bass. Solid opener.

‘Time Like Mine’ opens with more authentic sounds that dominate from start to finish. This one’s all about the progression and dynamism of the elements involved. It’s given a variety of melodic elements whilst the main beat rolls forward. Loving the change in flow half way through and the strings that play a subtle roll.

Cut up vocals are what proceed the main body of the beat in ‘Voidrants’ and this is where the EP really stands out for me. Anile waists no time getting into the main beat and he creates a haunting atmosphere around the rolling amen, dark bass hits and diverse FX. Seriously big sound and one that will be a favourite for the producers among you.

The EP is then brought to a close by the Jazz-infused ‘To Live Without’. It given a prominent brass section, simplistically melodic piano and cleverly used vocals. A much longer introduction on this track but it’s worth it for the mystic basslines that follow. It’s amazing how such a simple piano riff has the power it does in this track. Love it from start to finish.

This has been the release of the year on Med School for me. A really mature offering of sounds and, although relatively simple on the face of it, these are such complex and clearly thought out compositions. We talk a lot about Etherwood and Keeno being rising stars form this side of the scene. Is Anile about to sit alongside them? Perspective UK think so.
